I am sure there will be plenty of why is this silly kids bike thing in the Olympics articles , but this is a fair write up of todays bmx action.

For me, the frantic pedaling looked silly. Sure bmx is all about the fast start, but once they got to the bottom of the roll in they hit a frantic cadence higher than anything you will see in the velodrome which has to be un-efficient for gaining speed and going fast. *
Ahh yes but bmx racing is about pumping and the person with the hole shot usually wins….
So why did a see a tripple ET as the rider came into land then pedal all the way up to the next jump/berm? Also, if you go faster out a berm I’m sure the rider could get past.
it is quite apparent I am wrong since bmx riders carefully choose their ratio’s (I read for Olympics nick long has 43 / 16), but with these 8meter roll in’s I’d like to see some one take hoy’s ration of 51×14 and do a time trial or even a race.
* my scientific proof is you dont see cavendish doing crazy rpm,
also if you ride a road bike with a friend, and drop it down many gears so that your spinning super fast, its hard to keep up with your friend who is cruising along.
